Can i put a wider wheel on my bike mountain bike?

Q: I need a new rear wheel for my mountain but i ride off road quite a lot so i would like to fit a wider wheel/tire. They are standard 2.00 X 1.75 tyres on a 26 inch wheel rim. Is it just the tyre or does the rim need to be bigger as well ?. Will a bigger wheel fit my frame?

A: depends on the bike. the rear arms need to be wider to fit wider wheels/tyres. usually downhill bikes have wider rear arms and can fit wider tyres. hardtails usually are limited to about a 2.35 tyre or less, whereas full sus can usually go up to a 2.5. both are big tyres, but the best way to be sure what ur bike can take, is to measure the distance between arms on the frame where the tyre passes thru, remember to leave some room either side tho lol. that way you can find the widest size. on bigger tyres, its usually best to have wider rims. downhill wheels are generally wider than standard rims
