Q: I'm joining a rugby club and last night was our first practice. They showed us how to tackle and I was naturally good at it and I enjoy it. So, I figured I would play a position with the most tackling action?
A: In general, forwards have to tackle more than backs. I would say that flankers (numbers 6 and 7) tackle the most, because (1) they are always around the fringes of rucks, and a lot of players try to run through or around the edges of rucks (2) flankers are supposed to break from the scrum and support the defense against the movements of the opposing backline. If you want to play in the backline and tackle a lot, I suppose you should be a flyhalf (number 10) or center (numbers12/13). The fullback (#15) does not have to tackle as much, but often the tackles he makes are extremely important (i.e. try-saving tackles). Good luck!
