Does long distance running (cross country) make your legs bulky?

Q: I'm in cross country for high school, we do an average of 3-5 miles per day, five days a week. I want toned legs, not big bulky muscle legs. I also don't want my calves to pop out.

A: Just the opposite. Your legs will look more slender and toned. Although, if you look at sprinters, their legs are generally more "bulky". This is because they are using a fast-twitch muscles which are larger. Distance runners (XC) have develop more of the slow-twitch muscles which are smaller and more efficient than the fast-twitch muscles.
