Q: I want to join a Volley Ball Club in Long Island, New York in Suffolk County I have been wondering how much the price is to play for a Club. I am 15 years old because maybe the price might vary upon ages. Thank you for the help!
A: The cost can vary significantly depending on whether the team travels to tournaments, how often it practices, how many coaches there are for each team, the type of uniforms ordered, etc. etc. etc. There are a lot of components to pricing a club season. Your best bet is to find out which clubs you can try out for, then look at their websites or contact the club directors. When I coached juniors club teams, the cost per player varied between $800 (for a team that only played local tournaments twice a month, practiced 6 times per month, had a single coach (me!) and had fairly inexpensive uniforms) to over $6,000 (for a team that went to an out-of-state tournament every month, practiced 2-3 times per week, had 3 sets of Nike jerseys per player, and 2 coaches per team). One of my kids played on a high-level club team that went to the Junior Olympics during her 18s years. Her club fees were in the $5,000 range and that didn't count my travel expenses when I attended her tournaments. I was lucky in that the team that I coached that year played at a lot of the same regional tournaments, so my club was paying my way. :-) Some clubs have scholarship opportunities. I know that I once waived part of my coaching salary to allow a talented low-income kid on my team. You'll have to do some research and ask a lot of questions.
