Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera and Atletico Madrid captain Gabi Fernandez are now at risk of taking effective four-year prison sentences in Spain. They and 34 other players are accused of participating in a regular match in Primera Division seven years ago - Levante vs Zaragoza, in the last round of the 2010/2011 season. Then Erera and Gabi were part of Zaragoza. About a couple of weeks ago, the Spanish Prosecutor`s Office demanded 2-year prison sentences and six-year bans for 36-player football matches. According to local laws, however, sentences of up to 2 years for uneducated do not survive effectively. However, it has now become clear that lawyers of the Spanish Football League have filed a parallel suit but insist on four-year sentences, which is the maximum. The law in Spain entitles lawyers of football clubs by record of football forecast or La Liga to also conduct cases in parallel with those of state prosecutors.
A total of 41 people are charged, including former club leaders. Other well-known names among the players are those of Vicente Ebora of Leicester, Leonard Ponsio of River Plate and others. Among the accused are Mexican coach Javier Aguirre. According to investigators, Zaragoza has paid 965, 000 euros to Levante players to lie down. The game ended 2:1 for the team of Hera and Gabi and so he managed to save himself from falling.
